Tesco decision delayed.

From the MHDC website

Tenbury Tesco application meeting

Planners at Malvern Hills District Council have requested additional information from Tesco for their proposed food retail store on the Cattle Market Site in Tenbury Wells.
The application will therefore not be reported to the November meeting of the Northern Area Development Control Committee on the 2nd November. The next available meeting to consider the application will be Wednesday 7th December 2011.
Amended details are expected to be submitted and once received, people who have expressed an interest in the application will be given the opportunity to comment on the revised details.
Cllr Phil Grove, Leader of MHDC said:
“Some extra work needs to be done on the application before it can be considered by Committee. If the application is ready for the December date, the meeting will be, as previously promised, held in Tenbury.  I am conscious of just how important this issue is for the town and that opinion is divided.  “

Biggest Issue to Hit the Town in Years said...

Phil's comment at the end of your quote overleaf is absolutely right.

This is the biggest issue in recent years in the town. It may possibly leave a trail of destruction (if allowed to go ahead) even greater that that of the various floods.

Tesco's application has split this town and deliberately pitted formerly amicable neighbours against each other.

Thanks for nothing Tesco.

Not sure it is the biggest issue.
The bridge is a huge issue - closing it for 5 months will hit the existing shops more than Tesco would and unlike Tesco, closing the bridge also prevents people getting to work, or the library, or the bank, or the hospital, or the hairdressers, or............
Tesco is a drop in the ocean, compared.

5 months?

"5 months?"

Period of time greater than 4 months less than 6.

I haven't followed the bridge closure saga in detail but common sense would appear to be lacking somewhat. Is there a reason why the bridge work cannot take place between the hours of 6pm and 8am each day with a narrow carriageway for cars open 8am - 6pm ? The Holt Fleet bridge work on a major A-road has finished but there is a 7.5 MGW limit in place so, comparing this with Tenbury, why hasn't (a) the A4112 been downgraded to B-classification and (b) a weight limit put on the bridge ? Simple answers please.

The work on Holt Fleet bridge was (mostly) under the bridge. The work on Teme Bridge is (mostly) above and requires the road bed to be removed.

Once the schedule of work has been agreed, it is hoped that the bridge won't be closed for the full duration, just whilst the road bed is missing.

I have the cheaper option said...

I say just build a new bridge and pedestrianise the existing one as this would be far more cheaper in the long run than repairing the existing one

"Tesco's application has . . . deliberately pitted formerly amicable neighbours against each other" - goodness me! I'm sure even Tesco would be surprised that it possesses such power!

The County Council wants 44 tonne trucks to use Teme Street. Why, when this route already has a sign saying it is unsuitable for HGVs? The Council is spending over a million pounds upgrading a bridge to 44 tonne standard, when all the routes it leads to (according to the Council) are unsuitable for HGVs = another million pounds wasted!

The signs were put there to try to stop through traffic to Leominster. Several local businesses have deliveries by 44 tonne trucks. I'm one of them. The norm is bridges on A roads take 44 tonne trucks (unless there is a temporary weight limit)

Good idea - a temporary weight limit!

@WR15 said...

A temporary weight limit could be used temporarily, then the bridge would need to be repaired/updated.

As the money is available now, it is better to do the work now. If they wait, the price will only increase, and possibly the amount of work, which may need a longer closure.

"As the money is available now, it is better to do the work now. If they wait, the price will only increase, and possibly the amount of work"

Unlikely!
1) They money could stay in the bank for a year.
2) Why should the price go up much? The state of the economy, contractors will probably bid less next year.
3) Assuming the weight limit is set correctly, the amount of work needed won't increase

1) They money could stay in the bank for a year.

That's not how public finances work. Spend it when planned or it disappears.

2) Why should the price go up much? The state of the economy, contractors will probably bid less next year.

Every year (& every flood) more damage is caused.

3) Assuming the weight limit is set correctly, the amount of work needed won't increase

It's not the weight of the traffic that has caused the damage.

I think that the lack of a bridge will kill off Tenbury well before Tesco's gets here. I strongly belive that the people who have put allot of time and effort into fighting.....let's face it a lost cause...against tesco should have put their energies into making sure we had a crossing. I think that the plan not to remove one or both of the paths should also be battled save the possible increase of traffic to a new store.

I think Tenbury Futures were/are fighting both the threat of Tesco on the town AND campaigning to get a supporting Bailey Bridge during bridge works. They explain their position on the latter point on their blog (link above). Until WCC get back to Tenbury with an updated and revised view on the works though there's not much more anyone can do or say surely?

Mr. Longbeard said...

Last post a while ago from TFs with regards to the bridge stated they were going to conduct a full feasibility study on a temp Bailey bridge.

Don't know if they did, are, or are finished.

Tesco - still the most contentious issue in town.

I see it's claimed a new casualty, a town councilor has resigned in disgust over the issue. Maybe he thought the town council's eventual vote 'for' the Tesco plan wasn't something that sat comfortably with him?

The whole thing stinks from top to bottom. !!

Why?

I see Tesco have withdrawn their application to build an out of town superstore in nearby Ledbury.

Well done to the people who campaigned against it.

Anonymous said...

Unsure as to why Ledbury is mentioned as they already have a Tesco store on the out skirts of town. When will people realise that if Tesco doesn't open in Tenbury it could go across the Bridge out of town with planning agreed by SSDC , what control will Tenbury people have then, watch the town centre die if this happens.

Is the Tesco in Ledbury on the outskirts of the town?.Thourght it was in the town centre.
