An extra 2p or 3p a litre is about 50p extra each week (if you do 8,000 miles a year at 45mpg).
Isn't it worth that to keep Swan open?
It's just this kind of complacency that companies like Texaco exploit. I do about 20k miles per year and it costs just over £1 a week extra to buy my fuel at the Swan Garage. So, £1 a week is nothing you say - but it's £50 a year. Why would I want to throw away a £50 note? And I’m not paying for most of this fuel. You (the taxpayer) are. I’m saving you money!
Come on Ian, you wouldn't be "throwing away" a £50 note, you would be investing in the local area.
It isn't about "complacency" - it's about CHOICE!
It's up to you what you do with your money, but what you spend it on shows what matters to you.
As to the "taxpayer" thing, just pay for one fill a year out of your own pocket, that will level it out. Some of us have to pay for EVERY fill out of our own pocket, so think yourself lucky!
Isn't the local community worth a pound a week of your own money?
Another who does 20k+ a year signing in, but that comes out of my pocket not the public purse.
At 50mpg I'd hate to work out the cost at 149.9ppl, bloody glad I have the "luxury" of 142.9ppl
"Come on Ian, you wouldn't be "throwing away" a £50 note, you would be investing in the local area." . . . since when has Texaco been 'local'? And since when has exploiting a monopoly been 'investing in the local area'?
I have been both assured that Texaco set the price and that Swan Garage set the price, so who knows.
What does seem clear is someone somewhere is "exploiting a monopoly" not just here but in other locations too.
This weeks UK average Diesel price is £145.8
A local haulier is buying his fuel at £140.34 this week. I can't see that he is buying more than the garage.
How long until the Swan will be accused of overtrading then?
Never a bunch of know it alls who try to do nothing but bring down local business have i ever com across....
I am waiting for the attacks on Caldicott's next - clearly Ian, Beardy and WR15 will be fans of a Tenbury B&Q, once done there it will be the Regal - you will want a multi screen odeon next, watch it Swifts they'll be after a Gregg's next....
Oi, I like and use Coldicotts thank you very much.
Town could use a Halfords though, I wonder if a small one will fit in the shoe shop.
Opps, scratch that I've never used caldicotts, I meant Banfields.
Spotty Dog are moving to the old shoe shop.
The price of Diesel (or perhaps Diesel pricing) is a national conversation topic at the moment.
Rural pricing doubly so, but if you are happy paying way over the odds just because of the lack of competition locally that's fine, but many people aren't.
Swifts seem have have made a number of improvements/changes recently. Perhaps as a result of more competition.
No retailer should expect loyalty, but they can earn it with great customer service, competitive pricing, interesting promotions, etc.
Ian - Swan Garage is a local business, it isn't owned by Texaco.
'Ian - Swan Garage is a local business, it isn't owned by Texaco' . . . I am perfectly well aware of that. In fact, I was told that the owner bought it in the hope that Tesco might buy him out. Don't know (or much care) whether or not that's true. The point is that the fuel is, to all intents and purposes, owned by Texaco and I for one am not prepared to be exploited by their monopolistic supply position in Tenbury. Caldicotts and Swifts are not in a monopoly position.
Pets at home would be a good shop to have ,that would bring some competition to the town .
Ian - 2p more than Tuffin's is not "exploitation" - it is a difference of 2p!
If there was only one pub in a village, and beer at a pub 10 miles away was 2p a pint less, would you refuse to use the local pub, claiming "exploitation"?
BP Garage in Church Stretton on A49 yesterday (2nd April) nr cross roads, Diesel £1.45.9 p/l. Today £1.50.9 Swan Garage, Tenbury.
While I expect that some of this extra cost can be explained away by cost of transportation, less immediate competition, smaller and bespoke operation etc - I've commented previously on this topic/this blog that diesel is regularly 6 to 7p p/l less than the Swan Garage when we visit relatives in the east midlands too.
Isn't all this discussion about who's more expensive than who just looking at the short term effects of a much larger and longer term global challenge though?
I know there'll always be theory and counter theory related to 'Peak Oil' and the slow demise of our oil-fueled economy... But a good and easily-digestible documentary on the broader context can be found here (if you're willing to entertain the idea) at: http://archive.org/details/CrudeAwakening
