Co Op comes to Tenbury

Dust off those divi cards, the Co-Op is coming to Tenbury.

The former Spar in Bromyard Road, now trading as Star is shortly to metamorphosise yet again, and this time into a Co-Op.

This store will be the Co-Ops Bromyard Road, Tenbury store not to be mistaken for their Tenbury Road, Bromyard store.

The Co-Op is the world’s largest consumer co-operative with a turnover of more than £9 billion, 4.5 million members and 87,500 employees.

It operates over 4,500 trading outlets throughout the UK, including food stores.

Is this a change for the better? Only time will tell.

There is only one store in Tenbury and that is the Spar in Teme street its never shut and you get great service

Anonymous said...

Both Spar and Bowketts give excellent service but a third store should produce more competition.

Anonymous said...

more competition
brings better prices and better service

Anonymous said...

Keep Tescos out of Tenbury ,they dont bring competition they force all other retailers to close then they hike all there prices up

I WOULDNT SHOP IN BOWKETTS EITHER THERE IS STOCK EVERY WHERE AND THE AISLE HAVE BEEN MADE NARROWER AS FOR THE PRICES THEY ARE HIGHER THAN THE SPAR

Anonymous said...

With still loads of shops closed ,how did the spar open so quickly ? They were open within a week of the floods

@WR15 said...

The speed the shops can reopen depend on who owns the shop, and whether they can fund the repairs themselves or have to wait for the slow progress of the insurance companies and loss adjusters. Spar has the money, they have the contractors, the in house planners etc. They also have enough weight to get their insurance company to 'jump'

Are the holly/miseltoe sales still going to be on the former cattle market site this year.I visited last week and there was machinery all over the place.Does anyone know what is going to happen to the site?

@WR15 said...

No idea what the long term future is. The current owner wants to build a permanent Farmers Market style outlet. I believe that he is in 'discussion' with the MHDC planners. If he cannot make any headway then he may sell the site on for development. Tesco's have expressed an interest! Part of the site is currently being used as a waste transfer station for the 'spoil' being dug out of the Severn Trent building site in Church Street. There are various rumours about the location of this years Holly & Mistletoe Auction, but none are confirmed. Possibly at the Bromyard Road Business Park on the site of the proposed Biomass Plant.

Thanks for that info ,did the site suffer from the floods? if it did surely they wouldnt let a supermarket be built there

Anonymous said...

PLEASE NOT TESCO THEY WILL MAKE TENBURY A GHOST TOWN .FARMERS MARKET SEEMS A GREAT IDEA. IS THE SITE STILL OWNED BY THE TYRELLS CRISP OWNER.I CANT SEE HIM SELLING IT TO TESCO HE TOOK THEM TO COURT NOT LONG BACK

@WR15 said...

Tesco get to build anywhere they want eventually, even on a flood plain, as they have plenty of money and the best lawyers. Will Chase (Mr Tyrells Crisps) who was I believe, bankrupted by Tesco in a previous life, will I suspect not sell to Tesco, unless, either hell freezes over or MHDC are unnecessarily obstructive. There are of course, a number of other supermarkets.

Anonymous said...

I AM SURE THERE WAS A RETAIL DEVELOPMENT APPLICATION REFUSED SOME YEARS AGO SO I CANT SEE THAT THEY WILL GET PERMISSION AS NOTHING HAS CHANGED UNLESS MHDC GET A HUGE BACK HANDER

the co op is a disaster

bring in a major supermarket its tenbury only hope you be amazed people shop ouy of town and online for their shopping for god sake tenbury need to move with the times

Anonymous said...

Keep Tenbury alive!, bringing in a major supermarket would just shut all the local traders down ,i suppose that is keeping up with the times ask the local traders of leominster.Keep Tenbury different i say

Anonymous said...

Shame on you Mr Chase !
Holly& Mistletoe not in Tenbury what ever next?. He really needs kicking where it hurts

Anonymous said...

Question is, did he have anything to do with it?

Anonymous said...

100 years of being in the same place ,being the landowner im pretty sure he would have been asked

Anonymous said...

The coop is a rip off prices far to expensive

Told you so.
Tenbury Wells needs a new supermarket anything will do Tesco Asda Morrisons or a Aldi or Lidl even Netto.
It would give the people of Tenbury wells that are on below average wages for living. Now is the time to give the honest citizens a better deal for their money.
People are told a Tesco would destroy Tenbury but that is not true it would bring more people into the town to shop and used the pubs which we have.
I remember in ludlow all the do gooders tried to stop Tesco saying it would destroy ludlow which it did not the shops are busier than ever.
Now is the time for Tenbury to move with the times

The chamber of trade should be given the boot they do not do anything for tenbury just run a cartell

Anonymous said...

So you go to tesco then you go for a drink!Utter nonsense .Keep Tenbury free of the multiple chains all the local traders will shut.Tenbury is busy the Spar in teme street was packed out on christmas eve .Anyway where would you build a new supermarket?

Anonymous said...

its not nonsense but fact not fiction
TENBURY needs a new store or it will died.

Anonymous said...

Get your facts right Tenbury will die if they build a supermarket.40%of the shops in Leominster shut down when Safeway opened FACT not FICTION .We dont want a cloned town keep Tenbury as Tenbury

Anonymous said...

fact is that safeway was a out of town store
tenbury woild be in the town
there is the danger one could be built in burford
that would destroy tenbury trade would be sucked out

Anonymous said...

NEVER MIND BUILDING A SUPERMARKET LETS BUILD SOME FLOOD DEFENCES TO PROTECT THE SHOPS WE HAVE GOT

At last somebody is talking sense

Thank you for all the comments on this blog item. Sensible comments are welcome on the other entries as well. I have no official standing (see my profile) but this blog is read by Council officials at Malvern and Worcester and by various journalists including at the BBC.

Lets build a decent sports hall which would include five a side football badminton and squash courts this would help the youth of Tenbury

@WR15 said...

Didn't we just do that in the grounds of the school?

Anonymous said...

what tenbury really needs is a tesco express as all the other shops are so expensive

Anonymous said...

i totally agree a tesco express could have a garage to for petrol
which would be a benifit

Anonymous said...

We have had one built where i live in Bridgnorth.They are really expensive ,the only good thing is they are open from 6am to midnight

Anonymous said...

I go to ludlow if i want to shop at tescos ,i dont think Tenbury needs another supermarket .Look at the traffic situation now ,it would be utter chaos if there was another supermarket in the town

Anonymous said...

TESCOS ARE TO BIG ALREADY ,KEEP TENBURY FREE FROM BIG STORES KEEP IT LOCAL. THINK OFF ALL OF THE LOCAL PEOPLE WHO WOULD LOSE THERE JOBS MOST OF THE SHOPS ARE OWNED BY TENBURY PEOPLE

Anonymous said...

utter nonsense
tenbury is dying
people are shopping out of town
you only need to see at kidder or leominster
if you dont like it move

@WR15 said...

I recently read the following observations which I thought I would share.

£10 spent in a Local shop is worth £25 to the local economy.
£10 spent in a Supermarket is worth £14 to the local economy,
as supermarkets tend to syphon money away to Head Office and shareholders.

On average the local economy losses 276 jobs following the opening of a large supermarket.

Local shops experience on average a 30% loss in trade.

The loss of just 15% would cause many shops to close, this then causes a ripple effect as the more shops that close, the fewer people come into town and this reduces trade further in the remaining shops, leaving no choice but to use the large supermarket.

Whether you love them or hate them, small shops and small businesses are vital to the economy of a small town.

FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO SHOP AT THE TESCOS IN KIDDI AND LUDLOW GO AND LIVE THERE IT WILL SAVE YOU PETROL MONEY. KEEP TENBURY SUPERMARKET FREE. SHOP LOCAL I SAY

i work in spar in tenbury and why we opened so quick after the floods was because of hard and dedicated staff who put alot of hours in to get opened and it was thouroughly cleaned through the night by proffesional cleaners
