Wall work to start

The much delayed work to restore the Market Street Wall demolised by a flash flood in 2007 starts next Monday.
Local contractor, Alun Griffiths Civil Engineering, have committed to finishing the work by Christmas.

Two way temporary traffic signals will be in operation, throughout the duration of the works but WCC have asked that they be withdrawn when possible.

MHDC Conservation Officer has specified that the new brickwork and coping stones should match the original wall with as many stones as possible being recovered from the brook and reused.

The initial phase of the work will be to stabilise the bank, which was weakened and damaged by the over enthusiastic, and some would say, unnecessary demolition of the late Victorian toilet block also damaged by flood water.

Road works in Market Street will hit trade in Tenbury. The conflict between builders working on Swifts and the Hospice Shop, and the builders working on the wall, should also be interesting. We were told last year that work "could not" be carried out in the winter season, now we are told that the work might still be in progress in December. Yet again Tenbury will be in the news for all the wrong reasons, and traffic will be advised to avoid the town due to the roadworks. Businesses like Whites are bound to be hit - who wants to sit outside, sipping a glass on wine, while enduring road works and civil engineering?

Alun Griffiths operates from Abergavenny, St. Clears and Machynlleth. Local? Or are there two firms with much the same name?

I may have the wrong Alun Griffith, but the one from Abergavenny has done work form WCC in the past, so it may be the same one. If works starts on Monday I will check.
