Tesco's statement about Tenbury plan withdrawal.

Sophie Akokhia, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, said: “We have had some positive support so far from local shoppers and traders in the town but this is a complicated scheme with lots of individual aspects to be considered. While both the conservation area and planning applications were progressing well and discussions with third parties were ongoing, it became apparent that we would be unable to resolve all the complex issues associated with the site within the council’s administrative deadlines.

“As a result we have regrettably withdrawn the planning application to enable further consultation to take place, with a view to resubmission in the near future.”

the response shown by shoppers and traders shows there is support for a tesco in town

@WR15 said...

I think the support for Tescos is 50/50.

The support for the current scheme is 20/80.

The support for something to be done is 100%

How have I measured this? Pure guess work (& hours of reading & listening)

If you want the true facts go onto the MHDC website and see how many people wrote in for and against it .Hundreds against it, not even double figures for it .

@WR15 said...

It is very rare for anyone to write in and support a planning application. I don't think the figures on the MHDC website are in any way indicative of the balance of support in the town.

It makes me laugh, all this chit chat on Facebook but how many of the For Tesco people actually wrote in ,was it two ? Even the admins could'nt be bothered putting pen to paper ,thats how much they want Tesco!

Tesco say they had positive talks. They would say that. Tesco wouldn't say oh no one wants us that's why we have withdrawn because that's admitting defeat and no company would do that

Anti-Tesco 1 - 0 Pro-Tesco

Only time will tell.

spar is a rip off
bowketts is a rip off
co op is a rip off
at the begining of the gloaters campaign prices are no different
nonsence
tenbury chamber of trade is split the chairman as got a interest because her husband is a co op manager if she was on the council she would of had to declare it the chamber of trade is sleasely, now it was time all the committee members resign from now

all anti tesco are a bunch of w****rs
i thought i save you the trouble of moderating it

lol

TESCO IS A BEST THING SINCE SLICE BREAD

@WR15 said...

The only people that get to vote for the committee of the chamber of trade are the members. If you are a member then why weren't you at the AGM?

I think someone is bitter. Doesn't matter if he is co op manager. Council means nothing I remember a certain member of the council who also works in bowkets wanting tesco and being abusive towards me because I didn't want it. Now that's someone on the council. Only cuz your campaign lost doesn't mean people have to resign. Get over it

You put anonymous simply because you dont want to show who you are. I guess you are too scared becuase you are being hypocritical
Positive debates are only valid when identities are shown.
Oh and when the store does open I bet you my meagre earnings that you will be the first in line of the doors opening to grab your bargain!!

How about you show yourself then also 'Anon'

OK then, so its an issue with the location. Plenty of room over here in Burford. Richard Lloyds old site??(no traffic issues) Plus were mostly younger and more forward thinking over here so less moaning.I'll give then a bell. Problem solved.

Calm down dears, it's early days. They've withdrawn their current proposal but it won't be their last. Look how Morrisons in Kidderminster utilised the old buildings in their design. Look out Tenbury if Tesco have to try other sites including Burford, trade will be sucked out and the town will suffer substantially. I don't understand why the town hasn't the foresight to comprehend the trade it would bring into the town.

Oh well. You Tesco shoppers have still got the short trip up the A49 for your weekly fix .If i was you i would shop on line ,it will save you money on fuel cost and you would not be spotted going shopping by a certain person who is calling you 'Two Faced'.

So you are in agreement, the location (cattle market )is a poor choice.

Anonymous said...

Yes in total agreement, a ludicrous place to put it,it is probably the tightest spot in town to try and squeeze anything in! Were did the idea come from? I can understand that something needs to be done with that area because it is very shabby indeed and not a good advertisement for the town. I'm assuming it's cheaper to put it in Worcs as opposed to Shrops other than that no idea.The concept of a bigger store with more choice is not a bad one and i welcome it.Forgive me i'm late into the debate(dont get home to often) but it does seem like they will continue to submit applications until they get what they want. They have time and money.

I think under planning regs' if a Town Centre Brown Field site is available they are required to try to use this site first. (Tenbury is considered the Town Centre of Burford even though in different Counties) Once that option has been explored and rejected they can then apply for an edge of town / out of town / greenfield site. Only time will tell if they are really committed to this site!

Well most of Tenbury's facilities are in Burford. The hospital, fire station, sports club. Why not the supermarket too! Burford welcomes Tesco with open arms, Tenbury can keep it's pot-holed ugly carpark.

I live in Burford and i don't want a Tesco .

Tell us why you don't want one.

I am not a supporter of Tescos but if I was, and I had been encouraged by the pro Tescos activists to sign petitions in pubs etc, I would be feeling a bit miffed to say the least if I now discovered that the organisers of said petitions hadn't actually submitted them to the council! I want everyone to have their say on this issue, whether they agree with me or not. I fear many people have been denied the opportunity here (despite maybe the good intentions of the organisers).

That aside, sadly this issue is dividing our townsfolk in a most unpleasant way. I don't want a Tesco really but until the supermarket option is dismissed formally and finally, the site has a price tag that prohibits any viable alternatives. Therefore, we need to get this process over as quickly as possible. However, everyone's opinion should be respected, even if we don't share the same views.

I can’t say that I’ve come across the unpleasant divisions to which you refer . . . perhaps we move in different circles! I had thought that some kind of referendum would be a good idea but I’m not sure who would organise it and pay for it. I think the former is probably more problematic than the latter!

@WR15 said...

I don't think a referendum would have any more legal standing in planning issues than a petition.

From their past experience Tescos (& the other major supermarkets) know that whatever the local protest, if they get the store built, it will succeed.

Ian said...

You're absolutely right. The point I was making (and clearly failed!) is that at least a referendum would provide a clear profile of what the inhabitants of Tenbury really thought - as opposed to rumour and innuendo! I agree that it would not have any impact on the actual planning process.

If I signed a petition and it wasn't sent in I would go bezerk. You sign these things on good faith and the organisers can't be bothered. They say they wanted it then just leave them on the pub counter it's not on.
