Isn't all this discussion about "who's more expensive than who" just looking at the short term effects of a much larger and longer term global challenge though?

I know there'll always be theory and counter theory related to 'Peak Oil' and the slow demise of our oil-fueled economy... But a good and easily-digestible documentary on the broader context can be found here (if you're willing to entertain the idea) at:

I agree - and the moral high ground sometimes feels a safe haven. But for most people going about their normal business the price at the pump is the main issue just now - and it's hurting pretty badly.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the fuel prices at Tuffin's now that "He" has sold up (to Co-op) - Co-op aren't a big petrol retailer....

Having had a long conversation with the owner of the Swan Garage, it does seem that the problem is the way the oil companies charge for their fuel.

Whilst Swan is free to sell fuel at a price of their choosing, they are simply marking up the price they pay.

If (for instance) Tuffins were being charged the same price for the fuel then they would be selling at a loss.

This is I suppose the price we pay for a free market economy, but eventually, as shoppers become more price sensitive, volumes will drop at the retailers who are being charged the most (and are therefore charging the most) and choice will become increasingly limited, giving the oil companies even more power.

£1.46.9 p/l for Diesel @ The Jet Garage, Breaston, Derbyshire yesterday (9th April). It was 2 or 3 pence p/l cheaper than that at the local supermarket pumps.

Interestingly all of the local fuel retailers (inc. Jet) in that locale seem to have taken-down their prices p/l on their ad hoardings. Whether this is in anticipation of the prices going into "freefall" in some way or just lazyness on a big scale I'm not sure.. Curious though..
