Tenbury Wells Cattle Market Site

There seems to be something happening at the old Cattle Market site.

Surveyors were working in Tenbury this week surveying the Cattle Market site and the surrounding area.

It was not clear exactly who they worked for but one report was Land Securities, but this is unconfimed.

The site is believed to still be owned by Will Chase,(a potato farmer from Herefordshire, who pocketed about £30m from selling a 67% stake in Tyrrells, the premium crispmaker he founded 7 years ago, to Langholm Capital, the private equity investment vehicle backed by Unilever and Rabobank, which in 2009 donated an impressive £150 to charity!)) but now might be the time to sell, Commercial property.

Land Securities is looking to spend £1 billion on investments in the next 12 months, including acquisitions, and is said to be currently bidding for some £500 million worth of deals.

British Land is also on the lookout for bargains and has £2.5 billion to spend.

Development of this site was never going to be an easy option, but if players the size of Land Security and British Land move in, then planning obstacles erected by MHDC & EA may be quickly be dismantled.

The surveyor was asked to come to the site by a company called Bilmore ,this is what he told me ,whether i misunderstood and it should have been Buildmore im not sure .What he did say was that he had done the same survey several years ago and nothing had changed at all, except it had flooded

Thank you for pointing out the recent surveying going on in the town. I noticed the work on the Cattle Market and concluded this was preparation for the development we all know will come.

As the surveying has spread through the town and reading your previous blog on what might happen if the Teme Bridge, like the Regal heating, was to be condemned, perhaps the removing of planning obstacles, to which you refer, might include a sweetener in the form of providing a new bridge across the Teme into the Cattle Market allowing the present bridge to become used by pedestrians only.

Watch out for surveying work on our side of the river.

The bridge needs sorting first ,cant see anybody wanting to acquire the site if the bridge is going to be destroyed.Perhaps one of those massive companies would sort the bridge out as well ,or even better build a new one .

One of the 'reported' restrictions on developing this site was to provide a new pedestrian bridge across the Teme. I doubt the Teme Bridge would ever be replaced (unless it had fallen down) as it is a scheduled (I think that's the correct word) monument. I like the idea of installing a new road bridge and using the old bridge as the pedestrian bridge, but I'm not sure there is enough room. I did hear someone talking about the Tenbury Bypass on Saturday so perhaps there is something buried in the plans somewhere.

How much would a site like this be on the market for ?

More affordable housing is needed in Tenbury, why do you need a retail development all this will do is close all the shops you have got now .Take a trip to our town Cleobury, no big supermarkets here and EVERY shop occupied in the town centre.

I think most shops that can be occupied in Tenbury either are or have someone due shortly.

In some locations the addition of a large supermarket makes the town, in others it kills the town. It all depends how it is done.

I agree that additional low-cost housing would be of benefit, but unless the planners change their minds, they won't be built on this site

you only need to see more and more people are going out of town to shop because it is cheaper and even internet shopping asda tesco etc offer a first class service it is time the chamber of trade wake up and move with the times anyone who disagrees should pack up and go business is about competition

Price is not a key factor for most shoppers.Four out of five shoppers interviewed said this in a recent study from HIM .When asked if price was the most important factor in shopping at the store only 20% of the total sampled said yes
On average if a product cost £1 they would be prepared pay £1.14 in another store .However only 51%said they new the price of there purchase ,and only 44% checked the prices before deciding what to buy.
The study also revealed that spending trends in small stores was on an upward curve 21% of people said they were spending more .As for internet shopping how will this benefit Tenbury all you do is order it online you dont go into the town visiting other shops .Keep your big supermarkets out of the town they are not needed look at the recent survey that has been done on the town ,well done all the retailers keep Tenbury as Tenbury!

There are several internet shops based in and around Tenbury and the profits they make flows back into the local economy.

oh yes they are needed
take a look in morrisons for example how many people from tenbury u see shopping in there including members of the chamber of trade
surveys are never a true outlook

I would not do a round trip of 20 miles to shop at Morrisons or Tesco they are no cheaper than Bowketts or Spar if you look for the promotions they are are as good if not better, Some of the wines in Spar are way cheaper and the range is second to none.I dont think Tenburys population could sustain a big supermarket like Morrisons

I shop at Tesco, Morrison, Asda, Lidl, Aldi, Netto, Co-Op, & Spar. I don't make special journeys, but have a good idea what is cheapest & where, so stock up when I'm passing. I only shop in Bowketts as a last resort.

Tuffins are looking for a site in Tenbury for a 10,000+ ft2. They are rumoured to have bought or are buying the Swan Garage site. (Don't think that is big enough though)

Some of these comment are a load of rubbish TENBURY IS THE BIGGEST RIPPED OFF THAT WHY I MOVED AWAY AND THAT WHY IT IS DIEING A MAJOR SUPERMARKET WOULD BRING TENBURY BACK TO LIFE WHY TENBURY BEEN RUINED IS ALL THE OUTSIDERS LIKE U WR15

@WR15 said...

I never said I was anti-supermarket!

There is now a rumour that AF Blakemore are purchasing the site, with the possibility of a EURO SPAR built . These stores range from 5 to 10,000 ft. So reference Tenbury is the biggest rip off you only moved because there would be a Tesco on your door step! So so sad.

WE HAVE ALREADY GOT A WELL GOOD SPAR WE DONT NEED ANOTHER ONE

@WR15 said...

I guess it would be instead of rather than in addition to. Eurospars are more like a small Tesco or Tuffins.

Its about time Bowketts had some competition. Other supermarkets are alot cheaper and I only go into Bowketts if there is something I want that is on offer. What's the point in have a Tuffin's too because that is Nisa and that is what Bowketts is so will be same prices and deals - pointless!!!!

Anonymous said...

Eurospar would be good ,the spar that we have got now is cheaper than Bowketts .Tuffins i believe have pulled out of buying the swan garage .

As a disable person myself

there is no supermarket in Tenbury that is disable friendly spa u cant get round the aisles then bowketts was ok up to 2 or 3 years ago they made everything narrower
a modern store would help one hell of alot

Anonymous said...

I don't get the comment from the disabled person about Bowkett's. The isles are the same as they was and I have seen the girls with my own eyes in there help disabled people and have even done there shopping for them. Would you get that at tesco - not likely.
