Local people turned out in force for a public exhibition of plans submitted by Tesco to build a new supermarket on the former Cattle Market site in Tenbury Wells.The two-day exhibition in the Pump Rooms gave people a chance to see detailed proposals and meet members of the Tesco project team. Visitors were able to view the plans and many left feedback, which will be incorporated into the scheme where possible.
Tesco has submitted plans to Malvern Hills District Council to build a new store on the site, which would transform the disused former Cattle Market site and create new jobs for local people. The scheme would include parking for 102 cars and improved linkages to the River Teme.
Tony Fletcher, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, said: “We were delighted with the number of people that came to see the plans and talk with our project team. The feedback we received from residents in Tenbury Wells and the surrounding area has been invaluable.
“This exhibition gave local people the chance to see images and full details of the scheme for the first time and see how Tesco can work with local traders to improve the overall viability of the town centre.
“We are working closely with the council in order to provide all the necessary information and are hopeful that the application will be registered soon.”

Improve the viability of the town centre? more like how quick can we close everyone down ,then hike our prices up as there will be no competition
Tesco will not have a negative effect on the majority of the businesses.
Visit Ludlow or Ledbury they are bigger than Tenbury but have almost no shops to let. They are thriving.
60% of people already shop outside Tenbury, which by coincidence also seems to be the number that are in favour or Tesco's development. If the 40% who still shop in Tenbury are the same 40% who oppose Tesco, continue to shop as they do now, then there will be no impact on the existing shops.
I've lived in a small town which got a major supermarket - the jobs were negligible as far as local people were concerned as most were for 16 hours a week on short term contracts.
What happens a few years down the line when most of the local shops have shut and Tesco realises that there just isn't the income for them in this town (I suspect that quite of few of their shoppers will just be taken from Ludlow!) and they decide to close it down?
I for one will stop ALL my Tesco shopping if they come to town.

Please remember not all members of the Chamber of Trade live in Tenbury so they might be shopping where they live. The chamber of trade is balloting members to see if they want to campaign against Tesco or not, no decision have been made yet. I have to declare an interest. I am a member of the C.O.T.

I think the prices you have quoted are highly selective. Comparing a special offer at one store and a standard price at another isn't the point. Overall Tesco is cheaper and if you have a limited income, they have a value range which allows a reasonable diet for very little money.
I have been trying to sit on the fence until I know all the facts but it is getting very uncomfortable :)First the MHDC local plan says that the Auction Yard site should be developed for commercial purposes; however it specifically states NOT convenience/food. So Tescos are being very arrogant to apply for a food store never the less. They say that it will be 20,000 square feet (you can ignore all that they say about it being x ‘net sales’, square feet, that is just bluster trying to confuse you and me). It will be 20K square feet gross, a building that is bigger than the Co-op (in Bromyard Road), Bowketts and Spar combined! Tesco say that there will be ‘180 full and part time jobs’. They are careful not to put in print the split between full and part time so I am hoping that they might do so in their written submission as that number just does not add up with the sales figures that they are indicating. They also do not say ‘additional jobs’ as there will be jobs lost from the businesses that go bust – but that is not their problem is it? So this is tant amount to a lie! They are allowing people to ‘assume’ that their prices will be lower than e.g. Bowketts (NISA), Co-op and Spar. They do not have to put this in their planning application, however Tescos have six ‘Brands’: Hyper, Super, Tesco, Local and Express and the new Tesco Eco of which this would be their second store. Each brand, and in fact in each location, has its own pricing policy so e.g. the two Tescos in Hereford are currently priced lower due to the recent advent of ASDA. Tesco in Ludlow has higher average pricing (I guess due to the area being richer). So I believe that we can expect that prices in a Tenbury store would be higher than those – i.e. not as competitive as Hereford or Kidderminster or even maybe Ludlow where they have competition. But they allow you to assume they will be cheaper – so this is very near to a lie as well. We will have to wait for the other info about the transport (parking, lorries, congestion, planned measures), the river, the flood plain etc however, as Judge Judy always says, if you have lied once (even if it is only a half truth that suits you) then I cannot believe another thing that you say. After all this is said and done the Auction Yard site should be developed/improved. I believe that the town should work with Will Chase to develop it so that he gets back his investment, with a decent return, and the site is developed so as to bring the maximum benefit to and as the town wishes.

Prices in smaller stores
Our prices are a little higher in some of our town centre and neighbourhood stores because costs are higher there. Stores in town centres are typically smaller and have higher overhead costs (mainly rents and rates) per square foot of selling space than those outside the centre. Higher overhead costs are spread over a smaller volume of sales, and can only be recouped by charging prices that are, on average, higher (prices are on average 2-3% higher in our Express stores and in a few of our Metro stores than in our larger stores on the edge or outside town centres). We believe it would be unfair to use our big stores to subsidise the prices in our smaller stores, so we don’t do it. This way everyone gets a fair deal.
We have to travel to Ludlow, Hereford or Leominster for a decent supermarket. Tenbury Wells will thrive from having a Tesco and it will boost the local economy by providing jobs for local people. The current small local supermarket in Tenbury Wells sells their own meat and fresh bread, this did not close the local bakery or local butchers. There is a need for tesco and there is a large amount of local people who would be glad of the job opportunties.

Most of the people unemployed in Tenbury really dont want a job anyway, as the benefits they get now would still be more than if they worked part time at Tescos .If you want a good laugh go onto the 'Fight for Tesco in Tenbury' Facebook page ,the people who set up the page dont seem to have a clue they say one thing then say the complete opposite.
