The much delayed Market Street toilets are expected to open tomorrow.
It is now nearly 3 years since the Market Street wall collapsed after flash flooding in July 2007. The sluice valves that should have allowed the water to escape into the brook had not been maintained and had rusted closed. With nowhere to go the pressure and weight of the water caused the wall to collapse.

It really makes we want to weep that we have finished up with this travesty of townscape enhancement. People said that the design of the toilet ensemble would cause amusement - for amusement read joke!

You have to remember that the Toilets have been paid for out of Insurance money. If they weren't built the money couldn't be spent on anything else.
If you don't like them, I hope you made a submission to the public consultation. The majority of people who expressed an opinion liked the design.

But they’re really rather unlike the original design! The whole group just has no artistic integrity. Can you imagine any architect of repute claiming credit for this?
I get the reference - oasthouses etc.. I cycled past it this eve - it didn't offend the eyes, tucked away, pays ref to Tenbury/the area's past and [I must admit] I quite like the quirky bench in front - certainly not just utilitarian.. I certainly wouldn't expect a Le Corbusier modernist masterpiece in Tenbury - instead something that weaves in a few local refs - like these loos do. I'm sue they'll do the job they set out to do at the end of the day.. Hold it in and go to your own loo if it's not your architectural holy grail..

I'm not whinging - just expressing my opinion. "The new toilets are excellent" . . . in what way precisely?
I liked the design, not so sure about the execution. Perhaps we should stop harking back to the past and look to the future. Did you see the architecture in Valencia on today's F1 coverage. Wow.
I'm sure you're right . . . on both counts.
I heard that the builders have to come back, as there is no tap for cleaning, nor a cleaning cupboard - is that true?

I love the new toilets. An architectural masterpiece? perhaps not, but then Tenbury can hardly afford Sir Norman Foster.
I love the new toilets because they stand up and show that our town was prepared to step outside of it's comfort zone and embrace something new and bold.
For me they also represent triumph in the face of adversity. If we had rebuilt the old toilets, in a few years time there would be no trace left of the catastrophic events of 2007.

I have to say, I (and I plead ignorance here) have no idea as to how the end product differs from the original design. Where can I see the original design? I admit the end result is not perfect. But then, if you look around our town, little is perfect, and I love our little town warts and all. I never thought the Library was perfect when it was built, but I still embrace it because its 'our' library - it's inoffensive and doesn't put the other architecture in the shade, much like the toilets.
I personally am more concerned that the loos dont end up with piles of puke behind them (let alone in them!) and become a congregation area for the young with nothing else to do (my same concerns with the covered walkway proposed by the Tesco bid).
If we had that 'ideal world' ...............
